Singing/humming while playing the flute
[edit]"Kirk was also an influential flautist, employing several techniques that he developed himself. One technique was to sing or hum into the flute at the same time as playing." OK, he may have been the first jazz flautist to sing/hum while playing the flute, but it is impossible that he "developed" that technique himself. It's a very old technique found all over the world. Anyone have another example? Rikyu (talk) 14:54, 9 August 2012 (UTC)
Final performance, death
[edit]I was there, spoke to him briefly after the show. He was obviously not in good shape. As I recall, he died on the way to the Indianapolis airport. Exactly where I don't know, presumably in a vehicle, perhaps on State Road 37. (I'll scan the articles eventually...) From a Bloom Magazine article called "Jazz is Hot Again":
Multi-instrumentalist Rahsaan Roland Kirk was a legendary figure on the wild 1960’s and 1970’s jazz scene, and there are still people who recall seeing him at his last concert, given in Bloomington on [Sunday] December 4, 1977, at the Frangipani Room. During the concert, Kirk is reputed to have said words to the effect that, "At twelve someone has to go, but another will come along to take his place." Kirk, 40, died the next day at noon as he was leaving town. GXIndiana (talk) 01:31, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
It's "flutist"
[edit]I didn't change it because the usage is so prevalent, but the term "flautist" is cant. It is (and should be) "flutist." Just saying.

- Flutist and Flautist both date from the 1600s. Both are valid, as is “Flute Player”.Design (talk) 09:18, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
Influences
[edit]The "Legacy and influences" section starts to go on forever, so I'm afraid to add to it anymore, but Jamie Muir and Bob Parlocha should be mentioned as having been greatly influenced by Kirk. I also have a jazz magazine around somewhere in which his legacy and continued fanbase was described as a "cult" on the front cover.
